Love is in the air here at Schoonover Farm. We let the peahen out of her pen today so she can meet up with her peacock and hopefully make babies. Below is after she had flown to the roof of the feed shed. You can hear the peacock calling for her in the video.
There is evidence of Spring here too. The pregnant goats are starting to show.
The hens are starting to lay.
And the cherry trees are starting to blossom.

Cherry trees blooming? wow. We just had snow all day today. I had to shovel the barn yard twice! Mind you, it’s been very beautiful, but deadly because under the snow is sheer ice. I would sure love to have pea fowl, but I’m afraid the neighbours would rebel! My roosters are loud enough. I can’t wait to see pics of your baby goats. I’m trying to decide when to breed my oldest goat – she keeps going into heat and she’s 1 and a half now. What do you think?
Our spring is eerily early so far. But better then snow and sheer ice. The peafowl are definitely loud and sound like screams sometimes. Fortunately our neighbors are not that close. I am looking forward to the goats too. I think 1 1/2 years is OK to think about breeding, depending on her size. We have three really little goats that are almost 3 years (Peewee and Shorty) and 2 years (Miss Smith) that we decided not to breed but they are all runts.
I guess I need to figure out if she is a good size or not – I have no idea since she is my oldest and therefore biggest……but I have no other adults to compare her to. I’ll look that up. Thanks.
You are welcome, Monique. Per the NDGA “Ideal height of Nigerian Dwarf goats is 17″ to 19″ for does with does up to 21″ allowed in the breed standard.” That will give you an idea of how she stacks up.
