Jocko Died Today

jocko11november

Yesterday he was fine.  This morning I found him laying down on the far side of the field.  I convinced him to stand up and slowly move to the barn.  He seemed bloated and not interested in walking or eating.  I could not tell if it is his intestines or his bladder.  Some pee on his penis and no diarrhea.  His ears were back but no tooth grinding.  His temperature was normal.  So I gave him Nutridrench and one pint of Magnalax (for bloat).  I then gave him 0.5 ml of Prevail (a pain medicine).

He died in the afternoon still not standing, eating or drinking.

He was 13 years old.  Tom and I went to get him from Montana in January 2 months after we met.  It was a blizzard.

His original name was Bitterroot Ansel but I called him Jocko since we got him near the Jocko River.

He had gorgeous mioget wool and made gorgeous lambs.  I was going to breed him one last time next week.  No more mioget wool for me.   I am really going to miss him.  He was a great ram.

I’m so sorry about Jocko. What a beautiful ram! I only wished our beloved animals outlived us – it would be so much easier…..many hugs, xoxo

  2. Farewell to a grand old ram. I’m glad most of our animals DON’T outlive us; I’d be worried about how they would be cared after I was gone!

  3. He was a handsome man. 13 years … I am assuming that is elderly for a sheep?

Donna, I am so very sorry you lost your friend, and a grand, beautiful ram. I know he appreciated the good life you gave him. He was a beautiful guy and it will be hard to fill those hooves.
    Blessed be.

  5. Donna, I don’t know you personnely , but my heart is saddened with the loss of Jocko. In his picture, he is just magnificent, the golden king. His bolder crimp style is so evident in the picture and the luster of the light bouncing off his back incredible. May he rest always within your heart and his prodigy continue to flourish within your and others’ pastures.

Oh Donna, I am so very sorry. Jocko was a beautiful boy. I know how hard it is to lose a good hearted ram, and especially one who has lived as long with you as he has. RIP Jocko.
