Winter is Hard on Old Sheep

Today it was Bobbitt who succumbed to the cold weather.  He had been thin for a while and recently having neurologic problems but yesterday seemed at his new baseline.  He ate well and seemed to enjoy the hot water I brought out to him to drink and warm his alfalfa mash with.  At evening check he was fine, and he was dead this morning.

He was born May 9, 2003.  He and his sister were the last two lambs out of my all time favorite sheep Babette.  He was named after the news headlines of the day when the decision was made to remove his testicles (although we left his penis).  Babette died when he was 1.5 months old so he and his sister Monette became bottle babies.  Here is the photo of Tom bottle feeding him at our wedding.

He always had a gorgeous soft black fleece.  He even won a blue ribbon at the Spring Puyallup Fair in 2007.  Here he is in 2009.

He stayed healthy with gorgeous fleeces.  Here he is getting his feet trimmed in 2013 with Diddley looking on.

His last fleece was in 2014 and continued to be nice.  But since then his health deteriorated.  Despite being a bottle baby and a lamb out of Babette, he was never friendly.  But he was a well behaved sheep that never gave us any trouble and gave us lovely wool.  He will be missed.

Awwwww…so sorry! As Cherchez la Femme always said: ponies allus’ die young. (Old Pogo cartoon…).

I’m sorry, Donna. Glad to not be dealing with any old animals at the moment. One (Brian’s old pony – plus a few hens) this year was enough.

Thanks Michelle! We now have quite a few older sheep so this is going to be an ongoing issue. I try to keep them comfortable until the end.
