So Sunny Has Bladder Cancer

image

Above is the photo of her Tuesday evening in the vet hospital.  She had an obstructed bladder, kidney failure, and intestinal inflammation.  That tube on the left is draining her very bloody urine.  At that point her underlying diagnosis was unclear.

This morning we went into the vet’s to say goodbye and have her euthanized because she still couldn’t pee, she was in pain and was not eating.  But when we got there she perked up.  We took her on a walk, and she seemed happy and was trying to pee.  She even howled at another dog in the parking lot.  So we just couldn’t do it.  At this point a follow up ultrasound showed the bladder mass consistent with cancer.  So we brought her home with a pile of medications and planning to frequently hand express her bladder.  So far we have gotten her to eat but not as much luck with the bladder.  Her she is being fed meat bits by Tom.

So now we are going to try to spoil her in the limited time she has left.  We got her just before Christmas of 2013, hoping we could give the present of a new home to a pound beagle.  Here is the first time she came into our home and her first Christmas with us.

And here are random photos since then:

And a video of her on our porch.

I hope we have made the right decision and are not just prolonging her suffering.  But we will try to enjoy the brief time we have left.

  1. So sorry for Sunny and glad you are going to make her as happy as possible until her time is gone!! We lost our Sassy in January and it’s been a really hard road without her. I’ll be thinking and praying for all of you and especially for Sunny!!

Thanks Rita! We are wondering if we made the right choice but time will tell. I guess we have to go with our guts sometimes. We are canceling our vacation for this. But will do the best we can.

So sorry for the devastating news.

  3. I’d cancel my vacation, too. By the way, at this phase in our critters’ lives with it, we have a mantra–something like, “Every day with Sunny in it is a good day.” One day at a time. Holding you all, four-foots and two-foots, in the Light.

I was so sorry to read this news! I am glad you were able to take her home for now. Even if it’s only for a short while, it will mean so much to have had this extra time when you do have to say goodbye. Keeping you and Tom in my thoughts, and sweet little Sunny, too.

Thanks Maureen. It has been stressful but it seems like we made the right decision. She is eating well and we are figuring out the bladder expressing. She does not seem to be in any pain, just tired. She is not fond of the medications though but now we are down to two.
