Saturday and Blogs

So the early morning was somewhat lazy for me.  I watched the Sesame Street Town Hall about racism which was really helpful with great advice about talking to kids about the recent events.  Then I watched Mrs. Wilson’s Knitting Circle zoom from the WWI museum.  There was a presentation about women’s roles in WWI and how that led to suffrage in the US.  I got the lateral braid done on my project and learned about how women’s direct involvement at the front lines lead the President to advocate for women’s right to vote after the war.  The 100th anniversary is coming up in August.

Then I did some animal chores with Tom.  The pigs are getting noticeably bigger.

Several of the chickens were lined up on the barn’s gate waiting to see if I would put food out for them, which I did.

I was feeling OK until I climbed up the ladder to the hay loft to check for chicken eggs.  I got short of breath with just that.  This is one of my new symptoms.  I then went to the garden and did some very minor weeding and planting.  With that I was wiped out.  So now I am blogging.

I thought I would post about which blogs I follow.  I use feedly.com to keep track of these blogs and their new posts.  Here is the list of the farm blogs I follow there in alphabetical order:

I’ve always been a fan of Paul Dorpat’s “Now & Then” feature in the Seattle Times. I noticed a guy in the UK was making integrated cross-time images by matching Google’s Street View with vintage photos, so I made some of my own. It’s a handy way to time travel without leaving the house. I sometimes resort to taking the present day version myself when the street cam doesn’t offer a good match.

Stephanie Pearl-McPhee goes on (and on) about knitting.

Now most (but not all) of these blogs that are listed as having 1 article per month have actually not had a post in a long time.  For some of the bloggers they have actually died, so there will not be any further posts.  And you can see that these are not all about farming but also other interests of mine.  I also have blog lists for the categories of medicine, GOT, food, history, knitting, Shetland and Sweden.  But they are much smaller than the farm blog list.  I am not sure how accurate the following numbers are.  For my blog they list 8 followers, but I have 432 per wordpress.com, so it may be followers on feedly.com.

I do love following these blogs, especially with my recent illness.  It is enjoyable to read about other people’s lives, some from quite a ways away.  I need to update my blogroll on the sidebar of my blog site with newer blogs I am following.  Plus I need to go through the links on the sidebar and remove the ones that are inactive.  Good projects for me to do when my energy level is low.

I’m sorry you have had some problems today, Donna!
I enjoyed going through the list you posted. I’ll check some out!

    • Donna says:

Most of the blogs are inactive, but I keep them on my list. I went through today and deleted some where the links no longer work. probably should have done that before I wrote this post though.

  2. Michelle says:

I recognized a lot of names in your blogroll, names that I haven’t seen a post from in YEARS and miss them. But I hate to delete them from my Reading List just in case they are resurrected at some point; unlikely, I know.

    • Donna says:

That is why I keep them on my list too. But I agree it is unlikely. I went through them to day and some of them had links to their facebook feeds. So I signed up for a couple that I haven’t read for a while and miss.

  3. Liz says:

You’ve been on my mind the past few days. I scooted away from grading my nursing students papers (online OB lecture and skills lab…did I mention ONLINE!?) it’s been a learning experience…I digress. I paused what I was doing to drop you a message via Messenger; lo and behold, here’s an update AND some very interesting sounding blogs. Rest when you need, or sooner. Baby steps…. we miss you around the FBC.

    • Donna says:

Thanks Liz. It sounds like you are having fun with the online experiences. Good luck with that. I am trying to rest when my body says I need it, but now I am concerned maybe all this resting is detrimental too. Anyway, I am scheduled to start work again 6/15. None of my current symptoms (fatigue, dyspnea and palpitations) are debilitating, and work is not that physically demanding. It is more demanding in other ways. It will have been 1 month since my last episode of complete debilitation so hopefully this will work. I am taking two 12 hour shifts to start, to see how it goes. I definitely miss you guys and think being around people again will be therapeutic. I am still on medication that suppresses my immune system so that is anxiety provoking in this era of COVID-19 so I will need to stay careful. But hopefully I will see you soon!
