Turkeys

Starsky and Hutch are not picky eaters, unlike some pigs we have had.  They have eaten everything we have given them so far.  This is good news.

The white turkeys are staying in the barn so far.  This is also good news.

The really bad news is that two of the turkey chicks escaped the “pheasant pen” somehow and were killed by eagles.  We only have one left.

It was cheeping quite loudly looking for its siblings.  Fortunately that settled down.

I don’t want it to attract any more attention.  Here are the feathers of one of the chicks outside the pen.

Tom found two small turkey legs elsewhere.  I am thinking about moving this remaining chick into the weasel proof pen with the hayloft chicks (and removing their aggressive mother) to give some added protection.  I feel bad because I am trying to give these turkeys a good life and so far it is not working out.

Donna, I’m so sorry about the loss of those two turkey chicks! That has to be really hard for you. The remaining one looks so pathetic in the little video.

It’s nice to know that Starsky and Hutch are good eaters. I’ve never really known much about pigs, and just always thought they would all eat just anything! That shows you how smart I am. NOT!

I hope things will go better.

It is hard for me. I feel like I keep making the wrong decisions for these poor young birds. I hope this little one does OK. I think pigs generally eat everything but we had definitely had some that didn’t. But maybe we were spoiling them too much.

  2. I love turkeys and hope to have some (if not this summer) early spring next year.
