The swallows returned about one week ago. This guy is (I think) a violet-green swallow. When we bought this place almost 5 years ago there were deer, beavers and a cougar here. Our dogs have managed to scare off these larger forms of wild life, but we still have plenty of the smaller ones. Our pets do get an occasional rodent or bird but for the most part they live unimpeded (as far as I can tell anyway). This spring though we are allowing the sheep, goats and geese to graze more out in the forest out back so we have to consider the effects this might have on birds and frogs. Hopefully we can pull them out before this occurs. It’s a balance between wild and domestic creatures living on the same land with us.
