This is our new Akbash LGD. He no longer had chickens and a turkey to guard and was sad. So his nice owners wanted him to have a farm of his own with animals to guard and contacted us. He is in with the chickens, geese and peafowl and later this summer will be introduced to the sheep. He will have plenty to guard here.
ADDENDUM. Unfortunately Alex could not stay here. He kept jumping the pasture fence to be with the other dogs and we were concerned he might jump our front fence onto our busy road. So his previous owners took him back. But if you know anyone who could use s big mellow guard dog that has great fencing let me know.
He’s smiling! He must be settling in. Thank you for giving him the home he always wanted.
I am sure it will be a big adjustment for him, but he will have plenty to do here. And we will take good care of him.
Congratulations on your new family member! How wonderful for all of you!
Thanks Michelle! It is wonderful.
How exciting! Keep us posted on how he does. I like Abkash and Great Pyranees, but have been enamored of Maremmas since meeting Vicky Brown’s a few years ago when I visited her farm on Whidbey. If I ever get an LGD it will probably be a Maremma (still dealing with trying to get over the “outside dog” thing – my guys all sleep on the bed with me at night! 😉
Thanks Maureen! Unfortunately things did not go well the first night. He kept escaping from the pasture to be with the dogs near the house. So he did not protect the critters and is quite the escape artist. So not sure if he will stay with us.
Very cool! Alex looks like a happy boy with all those critters to watch 🙂
Thanks Denise! Unfortunately he did not stay with the critters but preferred to be with the other dogs near the house. I am not sure this is going to work out.
One bad night and he loses his job?
Yup. He was not doing his job at all. I think he has been socialized to other dogs and people too much to be a good livestock guardian dog.
