A few years ago I read White Cascade by Gary Krist. It is one of the better books I have ever read. It has components of interesting local history, amazing human endeavors, and colossal errors of judgement leading to tragedy. We tried to visit the site of the avalanche on the 100th anniversary but couldn’t because of record snowfalls, much like they had experienced. So today we finally made it. We started at Scenic and then drove to Wellington and hiked down the railroad grade and then a steep slope back to Scenic. Seeing the sites involved in this tragedy really helped me understand better what happened. It was a fascinating day. Here are the photos:
