Post-Burn Farming

It’s back to the farm with wound care.  We’ve been nibbling on the macarons that Denise baked for us.

This is where Tom has been sleeping.

And this is our dressing removal station.  We are using Crystal Springs water as I do not fully trust our well water.

The turkey that was supposed to become our tom turkey has been setting on eggs.

On Wednesday the sky was spitting out small amounts of white stuff.  When you took a closer look, many of them looked like little stars.

We have been looking at the burn site more.  The black burnt substance on the wheel and pole are the sweatshirt that Tom was wearing and caught fire.  You can see that the pole caught fire as well.  That explains the line of fire that I saw when we were leaving.

What I didn’t appreciate initially was how much debris that Tom was caught in when he was on fire.  How terrifying!  That explains all of the bruises we are seeing.

Tom’s son found the burnt gas can.

I am taking the photo from the spot the can landed.  It is quite a ways from the fire pile.

Our new tom turkey is impressive.

He is interested in our hens, but unfortunately at this point he is on the wrong side of the fence.

We had a pruning party on Saturday, and there was quite a turnout of family and friends.

We got the orchard all pruned, and Tom said it looked wonderful.

In addition, our grandkids made a really sweet get well card for Tom.

We are both exhausted even though we are sleeping well.  It is a lot of work for me and a lot of healing for Tom.  But his burns are all looking so much better.  Our follow up appointment at Harborview Burn clinic is Tuesday morning.  We are hoping for good news.

What a journey! Sounds like you are both doing quite well though. Hope the appt goes well for Tom. Your Tom turkey is quite beautiful.

Thanks Diane! It was been quite a journey. It was wonderful to see Kathy after so long. We are doing OK with help. We are really hoping that the appointment goes well and there won’t be as much wound care. It is still taking 2+ hours per day. The turkey does lift my spirits. He is gorgeous.

Was good to see you both on Saturday. Tom seemed much improved from a week ago, and lots of pruning was accomplished! I kind of love those little stars in the white stuff- they look a lot like a kind of sprinkles I bought years ago for decorating cookies.

It was great to see you as well. He is much improved. We are hoping he won’t need the mummy wrap after the burn appointment tomorrow. The stars didn’t look real. I had to take a photo to prove it.

Thanks for showing so much of the burn area.
I was wondering how long Tom might have to wear the mummy wrap. Is it painful for him?
It was so nice of all those who came to finish up the orchard pruning!
I sort of had to chuckle at the thought of the Now-known-as-a hen, setting on the eggs. I wouldn’t have had any idea!
The new Tom turkey is really beautiful! I’ve never seen one like that.
Marlys and I use Crystal Springs distilled water in our sleep machines – when we can find it at BiMart. They have had trouble keeping it in stock, and then when it’s ordered, it doesn’t always come.
    Still keeping the prayers going.

We are hoping in the morning that they will tell us that he doesn’t need it anymore. He really hates it. It was really nice of people to come and prune. Tom was really appreciative. I definitely got the gender of that turkey wrong. But so glad I have a for-sure and gorgeous tom now. We use Crystal Springs drinking water. I trust it more than our well. We really appreciate the prayers, especially now for good news tomorrow.
