Younguns’ Week

While we were gone for Memorial Day weekend, we got some new younguns.  A few of Fluffy’s chicks hatched.  This is what they looks like.

We also had some turkey chicks hatch.  The darker black chick in this photo is one of them.

And this is another one.  There is also a white one.

The other chicks grew up quite  bit.  They are developing their feathers.

And some of them started to get on top of the shavings bag.

After we got home, we moved the pigs out to their pen. Tom moved their watering device out there as well.

The pigs are starting to explore their new area.  From left to right they are Wilbur (the male), Miss Piggy (the larger female) and Babe (the smaller female).

Roscoe continues to make himself at home.  He has figured out how to go out the cat window but so far he keeps coming back.  Here he is sleeping on my computer chair.

The next morning the pigs were sleeping in their shelter’s straw.

I woke them up.

And they went outside to eat.  It all seems to be working out just fine.

The greenhouse plants grew a lot while we were gone as well.

I put out the red cabbage, collard greens, parsley and kale.  I moved about half of the tomato starts to the hothouse, and we set up the sparkler system.  I decided not to put out the basil, peppers and squash out yet as the weather seems like it will be little on the cool side for a few days.  I repotted the other tomatoes.

In other upcoming youngun news, I went to my niece’s baby shower yesterday.  She is due in August.  I have already been a great aunt several times over on Tom’s side of the family, but this will be a first on my side.  The shower was really fun.  We tie dyed baby clothes.  Here is my contribution.

In other upcoming youngun news, we rented a Dexter bull to breed our Highland-Dexter cows Sonja and Summer.  His name is Hercules, and he is a looker.  Here he is just after arrival yesterday (when I was at the shower).

And here he is this morning.  He is polled so our calves may be hornless.

And today, some of the chicks learned how to roost.  They are really growing up quickly.

In completely different news, it is getting warm enough that I think I need to shear my old ewes that don’t walk well.  I wanted to use my shearing stand to save my back but didn’t want them to fall off of it.  So Tom fashioned sides for it.  He’s pretty ingenious.

Here it is in action with Vanessa, starting to be sheared.  She had scooted backwards on the stand which worked out well so I could wash her butt well.  Now she will have less weight, be cooler, and less prone to fly strike.  Her wool should still be able to grow before winter.

It will be really nice, to see new calves, when they come along. They’re sure to be beautiful.

I would love to see your tie-dyed baby clothes. What a neat idea for a baby shower!

Thanks. I love looking at them and watching them develop. The pigs are getting bigger as well. I do look forward to having calves again. Really hoping for a bull calf. I did send your copies of the tie dye photos.

I really enjoy reading all of your posts! I’m so glad I found your blog, but I have no idea anymore, how long ago that was! I guess I’m getting old!

Per wordpress.com, you first started subscribing to my blog Dec 21, 2009. I don’t know if that’s accurate because that is longer than I would have thought.
