Vararfeldur and Summer Olympics Week 2!

At this point on Friday I made it to the halfway point of my vararfeldur cloak.  I must say that it is not a completely traditional one.  The most obvious is that I used a floor loom as opposed to a warp weighted loom.  It ends up being 27 inches wide instead of 1 meter, not sure entirely why, but the warp yarn seemed to be less yardage than advertised.  It ended up being 14 knots per width as opposed to 13.  I used our Gotland wool instead of Icelandic, and it is shorter.  I used commercial yarn for the warp and the weft between the knots.  I have used the wool locks in the grease and plan on soaking the cloak with just water to remove the dirt but not the grease so it will be somewhat waterproof as the original cloaks were.

Today there was more Olympics but not any weaving as I had farm and house chores to do.  But there were still some amazing Olympic moments.

Unfortunately I will not have a lot of weaving time this upcoming week.  We have the grandkids and a concert.  I will try to get some wool and Olympics time in where I can. Wish me luck.

Dad’s Cabin

burned down 10 years ago today. Here it was in its prime

And here is the progress on the rebuild as of yesterday.

Soon we will have a cabin there again.

Vararfeldur and the Summer Olympics Week 1!

I have actually started weaving my vararfeldur cloak!  I kind of forgot how to warp and weave since my last Olympics.  But there is still the farm.  A coyote seems mighty comfortable stalking our animals on the back fenceline Saturday evening.

On Sunday, I was tired from working overnight so I decided to sort the Gotland wool locks for the project instead of actually weaving.  Here are the photos of the sorting and the Olympics games I watched while doing so.

They were actually chanting USA and doing the wave during this match!

Tanya and water polo

Maybelle and field hockey

On Sunday evening I did the final chores of the day and noticed that Summertime is still nursing at 13 months of age.

It rained liked crazy so on Monday morning  I gave some new straw to the pigs to help dry up  and keep warm.  They loved it.

After the chores, I was able to resume weaving and the Olympics.

On Tuesday with the chores, I noticed the white peafowl looking regal on top of the grampa shed.

The chores were done quickly Tuesday morning, and the weaving and Olympics restarted.

This is a Great Blue Heron that landed on our barn yesterday afternoon.  I tried to take a photo with my phone, but it does not have a great zoom feature.  Fortunately it stayed there long enough for me to grab my digital camera and take a decent photo.  I love the GBHs here.

I took pity on the bored beagle and took her out back.  I saw this scat.  Tom is thinking that it is from coyote who ate some wild cherries.  What do you think?

I was doing all of the chores because Tom and Steve were off helping my dad and brother rebuild the burnt cabin in central Washington.  They found this deer embossed glass from the fire, almost 10 years later. Pretty cool!

This morning, the white peafowl was demonstrating tail feathers, like maybe it is a peacock.  I would love that, but I know females will sometimes show feathers so am not confident.

White peacock?

I also noticed Wally in our lounge chair in the backyard which I have not relaxed in yet.  At least someone gets to use it.

Tom and Steve returned this evening which is nice.  Here is the progress that has been made on the cabin.

Today, so far, I haven’t gotten any weaving done as there were extra chores and cleaning. I am trying to get 1 foot per day done.  Yesterday I got an extra 4 inches done so now I am behind 8 inches.  Wish me luck making up the difference.  It has felt like a vacation getting a chance to weave and watching the wild and wacky world of the Olympic games, even though I have been at home and have chores to do.  I am hoping that this feeling will continue for  a few more days.
