September farm day
Today was a beautiful September day. I spent it doing farm chores- trying to get ready for the winter. I trimmed all the goat hooves and check them for condition, anemia and parasites- keeping them healthy for breeding next month. I cleaned the pens out, put the old bedding in the manure spreader, and laid out new shavings. The goats and their guard llama have been getting through the hog panels and plywood we put up in the barn to keep them away from the stack of hay bales. Last night they managed to cause three bales to fall from the stack and were eating them through the hog panel. I moved the 4 large rabbit hutches in front of these panels to keep them farther away. So far it’s working. I picked fruit- grapes, apples, crabapples, blackberries, and plums. I rotated the animals onto new pasture- they’ll only be able to graze another 2-3 weeks then it’ll be hay feeding time. I moved a pheasant hen and small chicken rooster from this spring’s hatching into the pheasant pen. I pruned some blackberries vines back in our front yard’s shrubs. All and all a productive day- no major projects accomplished- just lots of little chores that needed to be done.
