Today I hate rams

I believe I mentioned last week that this is the worse time of year for a shepherd- at least this one. Today after beating each other up in a pen for a week I let the rams into their field. I was proud of myself- the set up this year seemed to be working, and they hadn’t bloodied each other up nearly as bad as they have in the past. Well as soon as I let them into the field they started ramming each other as hard as they could. With the added distance they could really get their speed up. Finally Lewis got what appears to be a concussion as he got dazed and could barely walk. Jocko’s limping pretty good. The photo is of what I interpret to be the winning ram. He’s still dominant even though he’s getting older.

After this fun and games I trimmed all the goats hooves, gave them all Corid (it arrived yesterday), and wormed them all too. A couple of the older ones are a little thin, but otherwise everyone looks good. I finished with this at 2:00 and needed to eat- I hadn’t had anything but a cup of coffee. After a quick lunch the no-freeze faucet had unfrozen so I could get water for the critters. Freezing temperatures here mean a lot more work with getting water to the critters and gates frozen in the mud, but it also is easier walking since the mud and puddles are frozen.

After this I shoveled last years compost into the wheel barrow and carted it to the garden beds. This was repeated 11 times. I intend to increase my garden this year as we ran out of veggies already from last year’s garden. Finally the sun set, and I was wore out. I took a Lush Blue Skies bubble bath and feel much better.

Oi! I don’t like putting the guys back together either. The rams even beat up on wethers, old or young. If only AI were cheaper, eh?
And I’ve had problems with my FF faucet at the barn this year too. Now I can’t get the handle up, even on warmer days…and have bee hauling wter from the house. My DH isn’t offerring help neither as he doesn’t want to brave the wind chills. I try to keep in mind that part of my family is spending time at the beach right now in NZ…you ready for a trip Down Under?

Me, too! Yesterday I was pelted by frozen rain/snow pellets blowing in hard – sideways! Oi! (As they say Down Under) My daughter lives in Auckland NZ and says it’s so hot they can’t move. Please remind me when I start complaining how warm summer is. 🙂
