Hatching, Fermenting and Pressing

Here’s the second attempt at chicks with a more reliable electrical supply for the heat lamps.  There’s 10 we hatched in the incubator, and they seem to be doing well so far.

I am preserving excess veggies.  We had some lemon cucumbers that did not sell in our produce stand so I wanted to figure out a way to save them since I cannot eat that many fresh cucumbers in a short time.  So I found a recipe for fermented spicy lemon cucumber pickles, and here they are.

Today we pressed the crabapples and some desert apples.  We used our press made by Cider Bob and got 15 gallons of juice.

We often choose a stormy day to press apples, but today was a doozy.   There were huge winds, and I kept thinking a tree would fall on us on the porch.  But we survived it.  Here’s the backyard afterwards:

And, lastly, a gratuitous cute lamb photo:

You guys are very productive. Cute chicks, and I still can’t believe you had a lamb born this time of year! Those pickles look good too!

Thanks Jackie. We apparently have hussy sheep. These pickles are my first attempt with fermented pickles. Wish me luck!

Those pickles really sound good. I hope the chicks continue to do well. That looks like quite a storm. Glad you were safe. I was so disappointed that I didn’t have a single apple on my tree.

Thanks Teresa! They have hot peppers in them so we shall see. So far, so good on the chicks. We lost power for 6 hours that night and had to run the generator for the heat lamps. Sorry about your apples. We have a bumper crop this year.
