Peachicks?

peahen and chicksSo today I found these two little guys under the peahen.  One of the hatched eggs is clearly a peafowl egg.  So I am assuming they are peachicks.  Unfortunately where the hen nested is the chicken pen so not very sanitary or private.  The hen was confused and started pecking at her own chick.  For these reasons we took the chicks away from the hen and put them in the feed shed where they will have heat, clean bedding, water and food.

peachicksSo the hen was not happy with this, abandoned the nest and was searching for them.  They were calling to her too.

I feel bad but these chicks are so precious to us, especially after their father died, that we want to maximize their chances of survival.  So what do you think?  Are these peachicks or not?

PS We had a pheasant chick hatch two days ago in our incubator, and he was in this pen.  But when we placed the peachicks in there, he freaked out and managed to escape out of a teeny tiny hole in the wall we had not noticed.  So he has gone missing, but the hole is fixed.

  1. Oh my
They look more like hen chicks

    Maybe one of each?

They are definitely both peachicks, Donna. Congratulations!

Congrats! Not knowing anything about peachicks, I would say the darker one doesn’t look like a chicken chick–something about the head/neck shape. The white one a little more confusing, but if it’s the same size as the darker one, I’d venture that they are both peachicks. Hope so. How exciting!

Thanks Tammy! I have never seen a peachick before so was not sure. I really hope so. It doesn’t really matter because time will tell for sure.
