Summer Chores

pigs lined upNow that it is summer it has gotten much busier here at Schoonover Farm.

There are younguns to take care of.  Today I moved the 24 recent chicks into a larger pen.  This meant I had to remove an older rooster and my favorite hen.

Here are the young roosters too scared to come out of their kennels into their new space.

We banded the last of the ram lambs yesterday and had to give the first set of shots to the first lambs.

There is also rotational grazing which involves extra work moving almost all the critters every 5 days.  Plus there is a lot of water being refilled too.  The pastures also need mowing to keep down the undesirable plants so I did two fields today.

There is also the garden which is going wild.

Today I put up the bean poles as well as cages for the tomatoes and cucumbers.  I weeded some, but there is a lot more that needs to be done.  We are having to water frequent with our warm weather and lack of rain.

We are harvesting tomatoes, spinach, chard, lettuce, herbs, peas, raspberries, potatoes and peas.

In the orchards I am tending the bee hive and inspecting the fruit trees.  We managed to get cherries from a couple of our trees this year since I was more diligent watching for their ripening.  Usually the birds get them all before we do.

Our blueberries are almost ripe and so Tom fashioned a more permanent netting system for them.  It does not look like the birds will get the blueberries this year.

It is a busy time of the year! Sometimes it is overwhelming, I’m sure–when you look around and see so much that needs doing. I love it though because it is so nice not to have to feed hay for a few months! I absolutely love your blueberry ‘pen’. 🙂 Good thinking.

Thanks Tammy! I do feel overwhelmed. We trade feeding hay for running lots of water. The blueberry pen is our best one yet. Hopefully it will work.

Seems like I have water running 24/7. I pray often that our little well holds up….
