I listened to Rita and purchased a tom turkey today. There is some urgency as our hens have started laying so I want fertile eggs from them. He is a 2 year old Narragansett and Sweet Grass Calico cross. I got him in Anacortes. Here he is meeting the other turkeys (and chickens) for the first time.
But then I saw this.
So I might have a tom, 2 hens and one jenny, but I also might have a tom, a jake and 2 hens. I guess time will tell at this point. He is gorgeous and should make nice poults.
On the predator front, last evening Tom saw coyotes on the fence on the back of the donkey pen not far from where our peacock was killed. When he went out there though, they had disappeared. This morning we looked at the game camera and saw this.
This is right on the fenceline of the donkey pen. This evening at dusk Tom went out looking for them, but they haven’t returned so far. So still not sure if we are dealing with eagles or coyotes or both.
In other news, I have been watching a Taste of History on PBS passport, and there was an episode about Benjamin Franklin which fascinated me. So I purchased his book of recipes.
And tonight I made Venison Meat Loaf. I used half ground beef and half ground venison. And I skipped the mushrooms as Tom doesn’t like them.
It didn’t hold together well but was tasty. So it was a win.

I love the quote on the bottom of the page!
I do too. I need to look at the rest of the book. I bet there’s a lot of good quotes.
You may have a dominant hen showing the new guy who’s boss!! 🙂 That meatloaf is almost exactly like mine, no mushrooms, my husband doesn’t like them either. I found to hold it together add a cup of catsup/ketchup. It helped mine tremendously. Venison is quite dry.
I hope you’re right about the hen. Regardless I have a beautiful new Tom. I will try adding ketchup next time to the meatloaf. Thanks!
Your new tom turkey is very handsome! I found that picture where the black hen is flaring her tail feathers at the tom, to be very interesting!
The meatloaf recipe looks really good. It’s quite different from the one I used to make. We don’t use venison, so we’d probably just use ground beef or pork. We both like mushrooms, but would have to leave out the port. I’ll let you know if we try it
I am glad you like the turkey. I hope he works out. I don’t think the port added much to the meatloaf so fine to skip it. Let me know if you try it.
