Solo Autumn Farm Tasks

Tom was off helping my father rebuild his cabin again this week so I have been on my own, holding down the farm.  Before he left we enjoyed the Bourbon-Braised beef.  It was really good.

Bourbon braised beef

He had pressed apples before he left so I have been feeding the pressings to the animals.  They are enjoying them.

Fidalgo continues to be rejected by the sheep as they are still scared of him.  I keep trying to get a decent picture of him.  He is so dark, it is hard to see his features in photographs.

Because Tom is gone, I have been contemplating using recipes involving vegetables from our garden.  He is not a fan of most veggies.  It started Monday with Rutabaga Apple Soup (kålrabisuppe med epler).  I used our apples, rutabagas, carrots and chicken stock.  It was really good (surprisingly so actually).

I also have been pickling.  I pulled out some fermented pickles and started another batch.

Plus I pickled some of the abundance of little eggs we are getting now.

And I pulled radish seeds out of their dry pods while watching the Mariners.

I am trying to train Sonja to go into the llama stanchion.  I have some wild ideas about milking her, if I can find a way to do it safely for both of us.

The sun came out yesterday so I tried to get more photos of Fidalgo.

I sold some fleeces too which was nice.  I tried to clean our wood fired hot tub out, but it is leaking too badly now which is sad.  And I took all of the chicken pictures and tried to identify them.  I had some roasted turnips and beets with some of the leftover beef for dinner.

Today was cloudy, but I tried again with the alpaca photography.

It was a very rainy day today.  I did some shopping, went to the dentist and cleaned the house, definitely an indoor day.  For dinner I made a Swiss Chard and Sausage Frittata. I used our chard, sausage and eggs. Isn’t it pretty?  These photos are before and after the egg/cheese mixture goes in and it is baked.

It is really, really good.  Now Tom is home after struggling with traffic due to the weather.  They got a lot accomplished.  Here are the latest photos.  So excited to see it taking shape.

That soup looks really interesting. Thanks for sharing the recipe! And I love a good frittata – one of those hard to mess up dishes. And Fidalgo – I must have missed a post somewhere. Gotta look back on your posts now. Great work on the cabin too!

Thanks Maureen. We picked up Fidalgo last weekend and the sheep are spooked. Hopefully it will all work out. They are doing a great job on the cabin.

Cabin is really shaping up . Fidalgo has to look like a big dog/wolf/predator to the sheep . I think all will settle once they get a good smell of him.
And your food, my goodness, I would’ve helped you eat any and all of that. Tom is spoiled. heeee

Your garden meals sound very good, especially the frittata.

I’m happy to see that cabin coming along. It will be very nice, I’m sure!
