Dad’s Cabin

We went for a brief visit to the build site.  I hadn’t been there since April although Tom has been there 6 times since then helping.  Here are his entries:

When we got there Thursday afternoon, they were well into it.

Unfortunately we had a major mouse issue in our Boles Aero trailer so Tom and I were dealing with that.

Yesterday Tom helped my father, brother and his partner Sue with the cabin.  They didn’t need my help so I took the dogs on a walk.  You could see the fall colors in the trees.

Walking back you could see the cabin emerging.

Here is Tom in one of the dormers.

Sue and Greg are putting up some house wrap.

Greg is getting ready to put more plywood on the roof.

Dad and Tom are putting up the north facing upper windows.

I was able to check out the inside.  Here is the south facing downstairs wall.

This is looking out the east dormer showing Greg and Sue working on the roof.

Here’s looking out the dormer looking east.

Looking west.

Looking south.

And looking north.

This is looking back at the Boles.

I went on another walk with the dogs.  You can see my shadow in the canyon.

And walking back up to the cabin.

Today I found that one of the jacks under our trailer had punched a hole through the aluminum pan under the trailer.

So that was the issue with the mice we believe.  Tom was able to fix this, and hopefully our problem is solved.

The dogs and I went on one more walk.  We visited the old settlers cabin that had burned in the fire a little over 10 years ago.

I was noticing how these trees were barely scorched on the bottom, but behind here all of the trees and this old cabin burned completely down.  It’s hard to understand fire.

The weather is supposed to turn ugly so we decided to head home.  On the way out I saw these signs yet again.

For some reason, they really got to me today.  I thought the trauma of this fire so many years ago would be fading, at least with the rebuilding of the cabin.  But apparently not.

I thought this sign was funny in that it mentions no fishing.  There is no water to fish in for quite a few miles.

And we could see more fall colors driving out.

It was nice, if short, trip.  I enjoyed finally seeing the cabin.  The dogs really enjoyed the walks.  The weather was beautiful.  It was nice to see family again, even briefly.

We all look forward to having a cabin again.  But it is a lot of work, and there is much more to be done.  Getting the roof and windows done will mean it will be secure from the winter weather, and the inside work can begin.

P.S.  Here are all the photos that my brother sent me for the build so far.  Just click the play button for the slideshow.  Apparently I got some of them out of order though.

Thanks for sharing the pictures of the new cabin, and all the surroundings. I hadn’t realized that the cabin has a basement. That’s great. It will give a lot more room. I hope the roof and siding will be on before the winter weather sets in. The slide show was fun to see.

Yes, it has a basement. The old one did too, but this one is taller so we can stand up in it, which is great! We are all hoping the roof and windows are sealed soon. The weather is getting nastier but no snow there yet.
