My Extended Weekend

So the rabbits are eating all of my squash that they can reach.  Fortunately the spaghetti squash decided to climb the cucumber supports and so the ones that are high enough are not being eaten.  I have exactly one pumpkin that did the same so hoping it will ripen.

I decided to try to sprout some sweet potatoes this year.  This was inspired by an article that sweet potatoes can supplement animals’ diets.  But I did not follow through well, and the weather didn’t exactly cooperate, so I am finally now putting some of the slips in soil.  I used to grow sweet potato vines on my windowsill when I was a child.  Did anyone else do that?  I do not remember what happened to them but guessing that they were eventually thrown out.  So now I am trying to take it to the next level by planting them and seeing how long this will last in the house.  Some other vines I am still trying to get roots from.

The weather was truly awful this weekend starting on Friday.  The wind was so bad that all three pets took refuge in the house near each other which is highly unusual.

I have decided that I really like the carved turnip.  It is looking more spooky over time.  The green “hair” is cool too.  I may have a new Halloween tradition.

This is how much rain we received by Sunday morning.  It was good weather for sitting in front of a computer trying to rescue all of my data.

I was unable to rescue my Quicken data but believe I have saved all of my documents, photos and emails.  I tried to downloaded all of my music as well, but it took up all of the memory my laptop has.  So I will deal with that later.  Overall, I am happy with my progress but will need to organize everything.

On Sunday we visited Tom’s daughter for her birthday weekend, met their new pup Sergeant Pips, hung out with the grandkids, and watched a Seahawks win!  We were treated to a wonderful biscuits and gravy breakfast as well.  Here is Pips.

Piper decided to demonstrate some of her dresses for us. It was a fun fashion show.

So far Belle is struggling a bit with their new puppy, but we got them to play tug-of-war briefly.

Here is a wonderful drawing that Piper made for us.  It is Gramma and Grampa with Piper in front of the barn complete with the hay door on top and the side door for the animal pens.  So wonderful!!!!

With all of the nasty weather, I have been making comfort foods.  This is a grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich (using low carb bread and bananas instead of jelly) and my homemade yogurt and homegrown blueberries on the side.  So amazingly good!

And with all of the amazing apples Tom has been pickin, I made an Apple Galette.  This is so incredibly good!!!  It is actually better than apple pie.

The chickens enjoyed the leftover apple bits this morning.

We only got another 1/2 inch of rain overnight, but suddenly we are quite flooded.

It is no where near the barn, but it is ugly to try to walk through.  I had a sheep today with a sore ear so we had to move them to the barn to catch this one sheep and treat him.  The water overflowed my boots, and it was all very unpleasant.  But we now have him in a pen getting ear ointment, and it seems less painful already.

Ryeleigh made mess of herself with the fresh mud.  Here she is in my fading vegetable garden.

So that has been my week so far.  I hope you all are having a good one.

Oh My I did not know rabbits ate squash ❗️ I guess that’s why Ive been an Electrician for fifty years ⚡️instead of farming

Wow, you got a LOT more rain than we did! Pips is a cutie and that photo of Piper in the blue and white dress should be framed.

Very nice! Good reading. I’m sorry about your flooding. Has it gone down any? I’m not able to “read” your rain gauge. How much did you actually get?

I love the picture of Piper in her beautiful blue and white dress!

Pips is really cute! I hope he and Belle will gradually make friends.

Thanks Jeanne! The flooding rapidly subsided after our neighbor cleared the ditches. The county refuses to clear the ditches as we do not have a dike district here. But they planted a bunch of trees along the ditches that now clog them. Plus they are telling us if the flooding damages the road, we are liable! But we are not allowed to remove the beaver dams.
I live that Piper photo too. I need to print and save it.
Pips is adorable. I think they will get along in time.

The rain gauge is impossible to read. I think it’s around 3.7 inches.
