Ice caves and getting ready for winter

Ice caves and getting ready for winter

October twenty first:

Today we went on a much deserved and relaxing hike to the ice caves east of Granite Falls. We had snow shoed here last year but there weren’t any ice caves and even if there were there was so much snow we didn’t get close for fear of avalanches. The ice caves are cool- literally and figuratively! But when you stand in front of them there’s a warm current- quite interesting./ And the day was beautiful!

This week I got prepared for a long, dark, wet fall and winter. I moved the animals into their winter pastures and got the hay feeders ready, and we’ve started feeding hay. I placed stones for the animals to walk on to get out of the mud that’s just now starting to form. I moved the ducks out of the pheasant pen to help minimize the mud in there too. Hopefully we’re ready for whatever winter brings us this year.

Pregnant goats

Pregnant goats

October eleventh:

I’ve been preparing the pregnant goats for their upcoming kidding next month. I’ve placed them in a separate pen so I can feed them more. I’ve given them coccidia prevention medication., CDT shots and wormed them. Today I gave them intranasal vaccine against viruses- this helps prevent pneumonia. I’ve purchased supplies as well- a new dehorning iron, kelp, more worming medication and coccidia prevention medication. We’re excited about kidding!

Today I also cleaned out the rabbit pen and did the fall sheep maintenance. I trimmed all their hooves and crutched them (snipped the wool off their butts). I wormed the ones that needed it and gave them intranasal vaccine. I’m exhausted!

NW Shetland gathering

NW Shetland gathering
October 2nd:

This last weekend we had the second gathering (that I know of anyway) of breeders of Shetland sheep in Washington State. Eight different farms were represented, and we had a nice time of eating, talking and touring our farm here. We discussed the care of management of these sheep and discussed fiber processing. We’re making plans to continue this as an annual event and to establish a Shetland sheep show- hopefully in conjunction with the Skagit County Fair!

To join the discussion and find out what we’re doing, join the NW Shetlands e-mail group below:

This last week I also created maps for where animals I’ve had here have gone to. I became curious so found a internet map making service and created these maps. They’re at:

Sheep

Goats

Rabbits
