Bunny Grooming and Other News

Right around weaning time, my bunnies tend to loose their baby coats and grow in their adult coats.   During this time it is easy for them to matt up.  So today I brushed all four of Ma Bell’s bunnies, removing tangles in their wool.  They are not too happy about this as it tugs some, but it is necessary to prevent a matted mess.  Above are Ma Bell’s red bunnies, about to be picked up by their new owner Jessie.  Below are her darker bucks, still for sale.

Two days ago I had brushed out the white doe as she was picked up this morning and is now on her way to Canada.  So I have 5 bunnies done and 6 to go.

Below is the other bit of news we have.   Our brown leghorn hen has been setting on pheasant eggs and manage to hatch one out.  It is hard to get a photo of him, but his head is peeping out on the right.  He is unruly, he keeps escaping through the mesh of the cage (as he is quite small) and causing his surrogate mother fits.  He always comes back.  I do not have a cage with smaller openings that they can fit in so I hope he grows quick.  This is not helped by the fact that she keeps digging up the ground, throwing dirt into piles to make it easier for him to escape and also filling up the water and grain dishes meant for them.

Your bunnies are adorable. I remember what a pain keeping them mat free was! I don’t envy you that job at all.

I know what you mean about the new mama hen. I get so ticked off at my hens with chicks, spilling and tipping everything and making a mess of their chicks food and water. I often end up getting so frustrated that I put the hen back out with the flock and put the chicks in a brooder. Of course, that’s not real practical with one chick.

I hope your little pheasant grows fast!

P.S. I’ve been meaning to say something to someone for a long time about whatever that thing is that makes a preview screen pop up when one is scrolling along, reading a blog. I HATE it! I’m trying to read and a picture screen keeps popping up. I don’t mean to complain to you ~ you just happened to be the most recent site that has it. Is it something you have control over? Can you chose to have it or not? I don’t know about anyone else, but I find it annoying as He__.

Sorry you got the brunt of that one ~ it’s been bugging me on LOTS of blogs for a while now…

    • Thanks for the compliments on the bunnies and the appreciation of the chick issues.

I hate that too and was able to turn it off when I look at mine and other blogs. I do not think I have control over it bit will look into it. But I do know I was able to turn it off (but I do not remember how).

    • OK, I may have fixed the problem. I unchecked “Enable mShots site previews on this blog”. Could you let me know if this worked?

Those bunnies are so cute. I am so impressed that your chicken is such a good surrogate mother.

    • Thanks Teresa. I think the bunnies are looking liek adults already, so fast! It is actually a pheasant chick so much smaller than a chicken chick. He/She is lucky to have a good mother.
