Today was a long awaited Swedish Day with my mother and stepdad. Due to a class I was in the morning, it turned into an afternoon but we still hit up the highlights in Seattle. We started with the Scandinavian Specialties store. There my mom and I bought some lovely Swedish foods.
Then we headed to the Old Ballard Liquor Co. cafe for lunch.
Mom and I start with Aquavits while Al was our designated driver. She got Älskar Aquavit (citrusy) and I got Nymodig Aquavit (licoricey).
We started eating with beet pickled eggs. Mom got Sjöman’s Flask (a Swedish pork stew), Al got Weinerpølse (a Scandi hotdog), and I got Swedish meatballs.
I got a kick out of the sign in the bathroom.
Then we headed to the new Nordic Museum. Mom was a little familiar with it as she has been taking Swedish language classes there. Here is the impressive map in the entry.
They have the Viking exhibit from Upsala now. Here is a swords from the Valsgård boat grave from the 7th century.

After finishing the museum we headed our separate ways home. I stopped by my grandmother’s grave on the way home. I placed a Swedish flag there.
Thank you Gramma (Mormor) for giving me this wonderful heritage I will continue with my Swedish language lessons and return to the Swedish club to see the Swedish singers.

Very cool! I don’t have any swedish heritage, but have been obsessed with the idea of making a swedish princess cake ever since I saw it on the great British baking show. Actually just bought the ingredients in the way home from work today-
I have wanted to make one even before I saw it on British baking. Post how it turns out please.
