British Bake Off Class

I signed up for this class which happened this morning, 9:00 our time.  It was for Jane Beedle’s Triple Layer Picnic Pies and pickled vegetables.   I had to do some prep work though.  Friday I thawed out one of our chickens, cut off the legs and chopped up the meat into small pieces.  Tom roasted the rest of it for dinner, and I made a chicken carcass soup with the rest yesterday.  I also thawed and chopped up some chorizo sausage.  I got up at 5:30 this morning to get the rest of the ingredients ready.  They filled up most of our kitchen.

And then the class started.  This is Jane from Season 7 in my kitchen!

Here is my muffin tin greased and strips of parchment paper added.  There is also the chorizo tomato filling cooking.

Here is the hot water pastry lined tin with added spinach filling in half of them (Tom is not a fan of spinach) and the chicken filling.  The chorizo filling will go on next.

Here are Jane’s coming out of the oven for the first time.  Then she brushes more egg wash on and cooks them a little longer out of the tin to brown them a little.  You can see her pickling liquid heating as well.

Here are mine coming out of the oven.  Mine aren’t as neat as hers partly because some of my chorizo filling leaked out.

Here are my cut vegetables ready for pickling liquid.  I didn’t realize that you were supposed to layer them by colors.  Next time.

At the end of the class some of the participants showed off their pies.  Mine were still in the oven.

Here are mine finally out of the oven.  They need to cool before we can try them.  We will have them for dinner with the chicken soup I made yesterday.

In other news, it looks like someone dropped off one of our peahens on Friday evening.  If it was you, thank you!  That afternoon Ryeleigh was going crazy over one in one of our cedar trees outside of the barnyard, and another had been loose in our yard as well.  I am guessing one of these ended up by the road later.  So we are very thankful for whoever saved her.

Saturday morning there was a spooky fog upriver on the prairie.

Last evening we had a date night with a movie and cocktails.  We went to see The Boys in the Boat at the Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon.  I really enjoyed it and had been looking forward to seeing it for years.  I absolutely loved the book. Here are some photos of the “boys” from the UW alumni magazine that I saved.

Then we went to the Revival Lounge for cocktails.  Tom had a French 75, and I had a Heisenberg which is described as a Rob Roy twist made with Dimple pinch scotch.

This morning was quite stormy, and it has rained all day. So it was perfect day for a British cooking class.

very cool! i remember Jane! will have to check out their other offerings. I’ve never tried hot water crust. I really enjoyed The Boys in the Boat book as well. Looking forward to seeing the movie-

I am going to have to rewatch one of the episodes from that series to remember her better. The class is a little pricey at 35 pounds each, but I thought well worth it for the education and the fun of it. I am now signed up for 2/11 and 3/10 as well. I have made a hot water crust before. It is easy except you have to be careful not to burn your hands as it can be quite hot.
There were some discrepancies between the story of the book and movie as well as the depictions of Lake Washington and the Montlake cut which were annoying, but I did enjoy the film nonetheless.

Your little pies look really delicious! Did Tom like them? I’m sure he did, as long as he avoided the spinach ones!

I’m glad someone brought back your pea hen. Nice that it was caught on your camera, too!

Please post your next British class. It’s fun to see how it goes.

Tom did like the pies but my strategy for keeping them straight failed miserably so he has to cut into them first to see if there’s spinach. And I haven’t been so accidentally eating some without spinach.
Now I am concerned that this bird is missing. We found a bird hiding out back so I thought it was this one but once I got an accurate count one is missing. I have been looking around but today and going to go further out with the beagle and look more.
The next class is gluten free heart shaped macaroons.

I guess next time you could make mark on the ones with spinach! Ooooohh! Gluten free? That’s right down my alley!!!

I’m sorry about your missing bird. Let me know what you find. (Or don’t find.)

      • Donna says:

I thought you might like the gluten free. I did mark the ones with spinach but couldn’t see the marks after they cooked. I will just need to keep them separate in the future.
We haven’t found the bird and have been looking everywhere. So don’t have much hope.
