On Friday we did some local Christmas shopping. Ww stopped first in La Conner. I bought Tom a cane that he liked there as an early Christmas present. Here he is watching the boat traffic with his new cane. He also hit up Mount Vernon and Burlington. We are trying to support local small businesses.

So today I braved our beloved post office to pick up mail. Here is the line.
Tonight Tom made us Stromboli for dinner.
Well before the pandemic Tom had bought this book
But we hadn’t ever really used it. So the other day we went through it, picking out some recipes that sounds interesting. Yesterday we had Bruce’s Barbecue Meatloaf and Potatoes (using the very last of our hamburger). It was good. Not great but different so we like it.
Tom wanted to make the Italian Meat & Cheese Stromboli from it. He was going shopping anyway so bought some ingredients. I made the pizza dough in the bread machine.
As an aside, I also did a little local Christmas shopping today. And I bought this ornament for our tree. Isn’t it cute?!?
Here is Tom’s Stromboli all cooked up. It blooged a bit.
It looks much nicer on the plate with some warm Rao’s marinara sauce. It was incredibly yummy. My first Stromboli was in Indiana. I do not remember well enough to know which one was better, but I know that they were both very tasty. Almost scary tasty.

This is what I am sipping as I type. So that is our recent pandemic holiday eating and drinking. I am not worrying about healthy eating right now as work has been so incredibly stressful with the pandemic surge. (And I am just having one cocktail per day). I am just doing what I can to lift my mood. I am hoping to get the vaccine this week or next. Fingers crossed that this pandemic will start slowing soon. I am not sure how much more of it I can take.

Is Tom’s new cane hand made? How is his knee?
I’m using a cane that was my grandmother’s. One day I got to thinking that it may have actually been my grandfather’s cane! He died in 1943, when I was only three years old. He was a fairly young man, I guess. I’ll have to look it up in Grandma’s Bible!

Stromboli is very good. It is basically a rolled up pizza though. His new cane is handmade and it is gorgeous. I should get a good picture of it posted. There is a shop in La Conner that is all amazing items made from wood. I have definitely been a customer there for gifts over the years. It would be great if you could find your grandfather’s cane!
I was first introduced to stromboli by a member of our crew team in college. her parents used to bring them to our races whenever we rowed in Philly. good stuff! so you guys use the PO in Bow, eh? I was just at the SW post office Monday mailing some stuff and there was a line there too (not as strictly distanced, but not too bad)
Stromboli is good stuff. I learned about it late in life though. We have used the Bow Post Office for years. They were my post office when IO lived on Bow Hill and when the SW post office kept messing up our mail here we switched back to a PO Box in Bow. I love it. Our mail is secure and the people are friendly. With the pandemic though the office only has one customer at a time inside and so with the holidays there are usually lines outside. I haven’t stood in line in the rain yet but I am sure that will happen.

Stromboli are really common here, especially for school fundraisers. We also have “wedgies” which is a baked meat and cheese sandwich between two pizza shells. Both are greasy delicious and neither is healthy. totally worth it though.
