Radishes and Other News

First, some of the other news.  Our Rhodies are doing surprisingly well this year, better than ever.  I think cutting down the trees around them helped.  It’s really nice to see.

On Mother’s Day, we visited Tom’s mother.  But I did post this photo on Facebook of me, my mother and her mother from 1965.  It was well received.

We have a new frog in the greenhouse.

On Tuesday, we went to Anderson School and saw the daughter of Joe Rantz talked about her father and his experiences with crew and winning the Olympics in 1936.  I loved this book and enjoyed the movie so it was great to see his daughter’s enthusiasm for both.

Wednesday, I had my rheumatology appointment in Everett.  It was disappointing in that my arthritis seems to be returning after stopping my Remicade infusions.  But at least we are going to try a less immunosuppressive medication first to see if it works.  So I will be starting sulfasalazine which didn’t work before, but there’s hope it might work for me this time as the inflammation isn’t as bad as in 2020.  I really hope this works.

But I had thought I had made reservations at Lombardi’s in Everett.  I had always wanted to eat here as I used to drive by it when I was running back and forth between two hospitals when I worked in Everett.  So I decided this was the time.  Tom drove me to my appointment, and I invited my mom and Al to join.  Unfortunately, my reservations got messed up, and we had a table by the kitchen rather than with a view of the marina.  But the dinner was great.  We all seemed to have a good time. Here are my lamb meatballs.

Still no issues with the coyote.  The pasture camera in its new location hasn’t picked her up.  Just a rabbit and Steve when I let him out to prowl around.

Yesterday Tom and I joined his family with a wine and whiskey tasting adventure.  We started at Sparkman Cellars.   Unfortunately, they discontinued their placements in favor of less entertaining brochures.  Fortunately I have a photo of what the placemats used to say.  I think it’s hilarious.

Next was the whiskey tasting.  This is one of the stills at Woodinville Whiskey.

We had a great time and came home with some lovely wine and whiskey.

Today was back to the farm.  The pigs are getting bigger and are so far not picky with their food, which is great.

I decided today was radish day.  I plant radishes as row marker for more slowly germinating crops  This year, for some reason, I decided to plant a lot of radish with the peas.  Now there is a lot of ripe radish to deal with.

I have been researching radish recipes online.  The first I tried was Radish Salad, described as a salad with a Scandinavian twist.  It has caraway seed so I thought I would like it.  I decided to add some carrots and our lettuce.  I will have it tomorrow at work so hopefully it will be good.  I had a radish sandwich for lunch today which was excellent.

Then I make Polish Cottage Cheese Dip (Gzik).  I had it as a snack on some Wasa crackers.  I guess our radishes are not the spicy as it wasn’t that spicy but still good.  It did remind me of my paternal grandmother who worked at a cottage cheese plant in Iowa during the depression and never ate it after that.  I can only imagine what she might have witnessed.  Hopefully sanitation has improved since then.

Next I tried to make Fauxtato Chips.  This was my first attempt at air frying in our new fryer/toaster/etc.  Unfortunately it didn’t work out.  I “fried” for more than twice the amount of time, but they were still soggy although some were burnt.

Then I started some Fermented Radishes.  I will know if 5-10 days if they turn out.

I am curious what you all do when you have too many radishes.  Unfortunately, the livestock won’t eat them or their leaves so I have to get more creative.

I made Bicicletta as a cocktail for myself this evening.  And I managed to use up the Campari that Keith and Christiana gave me for Christmas in 2020.  So this is a milestone.  The drink was good, but I am not a huge Campari fan.  But it did introduce me to the complex flavors that liqueurs can offer in cocktails so I am incredibly thankful for their contribution to my cocktail journey.

And all we caught on the pasture camera today was another rabbit.  Which is good news, of course.

So that is the news from Schoonover Farm.

Have you tried homeopathy for your arthritis? Or cutting down on inflammatory food like pototoes, etc, alcohol? My husband has had luck with this.
