On this Veterans Day, I wanted to remember my relatives that have been war veterans. Of course, first and foremost, is my step-father Al who served as an Army photographer in the Vietnam War.
Then there was my Uncle Jim who served in the Vietnam War as well. Here he is at Fort Lewis entering the Army in 1969.
Further back is my great, great grandfather on my father’s side who fought in the Civil War. He ultimately died of his war injuries.
I had previous posted his diary.
But recently I have been learning about my ancestors on my mother’s who were veterans of the Revolutionary War. This is what I have learned.
David Jenkins (July 2, 1731-July 27, 1797) was Col of the 10th Batt., Lancaster County Militia 1777. (PA Arch. s 5, v 7, 974-975-991; PA Arch. s 6, v 11, p 218). His son, John Jenkins, Jr. (1760-Jul7 30, 1786), served as a Private in the 4th Co., 5th Battalion. David’s brother, John Jenkins (September 24, 1732-March 7, 1810), also served as a Private in the 4th Co., 10 Battalion.
Adam Reigart ( 11 November 11, 1739- May 9, 1813) became lieutenant colonel of the 1st Battalion of the Lancaster County Militia.
John Carmichael (1727-November 15, 1785) was deeply involved in the Revolutionary war as a pastor was with the army at the battle of Brooklyn and at Valley Forge. There is a Veterans Markers on his grave, but I haven’t found yet that he actually served in the military. I will need to do more research. His son, Washington Gates Carmichael, entered the United States army at an early age, and fell a victim to yellow fever at Fort St. Philip.
I need to do more research and learn more about their activities during this war. But I am today remembering these men’s contributions to our country and trying to honor them.

Wow! That’s really impressive, that you have so many ancestors who were defending out country! I don’t know of anyone in my ancestors, who fought for our country.
It is impressive. I only really learned about the Revolutionary War veterans on our Pennsylvania trip. I need to do more research, but it looks like John Carmichael provided spiritual and material (literally linen) help to George Washington. Pretty amazing, but I need to do more research. I had no idea.
