Even More Farm Blogging

I have been working on spoiling the pigs.  I have started scratching their backs.  First it was Dewey that enjoyed it, but now I have Louie and Dewey liking it.

There was a thunderstorm that came through when I was at work last Saturday.  Tom stayed up to watch it.  The next morning the plastic had been torn off of the tomato hothouse, and the bean poles had been partially flattened.  I had to fix this.

I continue to try to spoil the pigs with outdated snacks and sweets from our pantry.

The grapes are almost ripe, and last year I didn’t get any because the birds got under my netting and ate them before I picked them.  Here are the grapes this year.

I was heading out to net them but noticed these feathers in front of them.

I counted our poultry, and we still have 6 peafowl, 9 turkeys and 58 chickens.  So not sure what this is.  There are enough feathers that I doubt the bird survived but haven’t found a body.  Maybe my counts are wrong, maybe it is a wild bird, or maybe a bird that someone dumped (which has happened plenty before).  What do you think?

But I did get the grapes netted.  It is better than last year with less gaps.  Hopefully I will get some grapes this year.

I just thought this was a nice photo of Olivia the donkey and Sonja the cow enjoying their breakfasts.

Tom had been out of town this week, working on my dad’s cabin rebuild.  The dogs are gone too so it has been one on one time with Wally the cat.  She has been watching me while I do the chores.

When Tom is gone, I get to eat more what I want.  So I harvested some of our basil and made Pesto Beans.  It was really good!

Today I dug through more foods in our pantry and found grains and syrups that had expired.  I cooked them up into a slop for the pigs today.  It was warm which I think was nice for them on blustery day.

I also found some expired flours, coconut oil, and dried egg whites.  I added more of the syrups and made these quick breads.  They will get them for breakfast tomorrow.

Too Slim and the Taildraggers were playing in nearby Anacortes last night.  Tom was still away, but my mother joined me.  It was fun.

I am not sure I have heard him play this song before.  I figured out that I first saw his 25 years ago.  Still a fan.

They are making good progress on the cabin, especially on the decks.

Tom is back home now which is nice.  That is my week on the farm.

You had quite a week! At least you had your beautiful cat for company!
I hope you will get lots of grapes this year. What kind do you have! I love the seedless ones for eating, but you can’t beat the Concords for juice and jelly!

    Have a good Sunday!

We have a variety of donated grape plants. There are green and purple ones. Wine grapes and eating ones. Looking forward to eating some this year.

Here is my best Sherlock Holmes answer on the feathers. The fox took the bird with him leaving feathers. or coyote. The feathers seem long so thinking rooster chicken or small pea fowl. No colored feathers so more likely pea hen or black and white rooster, if you had one. Not sure about wild bird , if it was it was a doozy.
    Was that fun or what?
